The winter holidays are a time of festivity and fun, of joy and sharing. These holidays belong to everyone. It bothers me when a group lays claim to ownership of symbols that are ancient, universal, and bring happiness and renewed hope to all. In that spirit, I offer this...
Holiday Carol by Robin Frederick December '05 Although a Christmas tree may look divine With its tinsel and it's plastic star ashine There were no fir trees in the manger No choirs of forest rangers No shepherds watching over Douglas pines. Mistletoe or holly on a stem In the Galilee you won't see none o' them And I'll just bet ya There wasn't a poinsettia Anywhere around the town of Bethlehem Bridge: No deciduous or annual Sang 'Come, O come Emmanuel' And Mary wasn't wrapping Christmas gifts But pagan lads and misses And those who worshipped Mithras Would feel right at home on December 25th. You can still sing 'In Excelsis Deo' And spend the evening polishing your halo But we're all in this together So in every card and letter I'll be wishing you a Happy non-exclusive, all-inclusive Holidaaaaaaaay-ooooooooo! It's December 21st - Happy Winter Solstice to all! For fun holiday facts and trivia, check out some of these sites: History of the poinsettia Cult of Mithras Winter Solstice Holly
