STRATEGY FOR THE DAY: Say when. "When!"

I recently received a couple of requests for licenses for "Been Smoking Too Long"; in fact, both arrived on the same day. The first one came from the music supervisor of a new film written and directed by comedian Andy Dick. The film is called Danny Roane: First Time Director. It's a 'mockumentary' a la Christopher Guest films like This Is Spinal Tap. (Which I love!) The tag-line is "Actor gets sober, becomes director, gets... not sober." I think i can see how the song fits in. Andy Dick is a very talented comedian and the trailer had me laughing. The film will be playing at festivals starting today at SXSW Film and Music Festival in Austin, TX. View the trailer.

The other license request was from a new indie label out of Seattle called Chroma Sound. The artist is Jeff Fielder. For various reasons, his version is the one that ended up in the Andy Dick film. i haven't heard it yet but everyone is saying good things about it so I'm looking forward to hearing it.

I've been getting some nice radio play for my own ambient chill version of that song as well as "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair," both from my Blue Flame album. Barnes Newberry is playing them on station WUMB in Boston, MA. His show Highway 61 Revisited airs on Saturday mornings and features a mix of folk and folk rock from the 1960's. He also includes covers of those songs by contemporary artists - an idea I REALLY like. What a great music mix and a way of hearing the differences and commonalities across the decades. I've begun streaming this station on the internet. Definitely worth a listen in my opinion. WUMB home page.

I just got a notice in my Guestbook that the annual Nick Drake Gathering in Tanworth-in-Arden has been scheduled for the end of July. I think this is the third one. This is a dedicated group of people who put in a lot of time and effort to make this happen. They do it out of a genuine love for Nick's music. Read more about it: the Nick Drake Gathering.
