I lectured on "Writing for the Hot AC and Pop Markets" at SongU.com. At 6 PM Los Angeles time, I 'showed up' in the e-auditorium at SongU and was joined by 25 students from all over the world. I was aware that it around 2 AM for some of them and was impressed by their fortitude! Not to mention the fact that they can keep their eyes open and their brains going at that hour. Thankfully this was a reasonably low-tech affair - no videocams were rolling, I didn't have to comb my hair and make myself presentable, just turn up with the knowledge. I liked it already! I think the only unnerving thing was not being able to look at my listeners. I realize I take a lot of clues from the poeple around me. If they look bored, I do something to grab their attention. If they look perplexed, I ask if they need clarification. In this audio-only format, they can type questions and I can answer on mic. So I have deduce what's going on from their questions. They were an astute bunch and everyone seemed to be getting it. At least I hope they were. I'm scheduled to give feedback on individual songs for an hour starting later this week. Same audio format, everyone listens to a song at the same time and then I give comments, hopefully useful ones. So this was my introduction to internet teaching. The work is fun, the students are motivated, and I like the commute! * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * Read A Brief History Of Love Songs by Robin Frederick at the Sound Experience Music web site.
