STRATEGY FOR THE DAY: back away slowly

I've just been listening to Hederos and Hellberg's album of piano/vocal covers and it is great. I love this. Very introspective, thoughtful, emotional, quiet, intense. They cover the Velvet Underground's "Pale Blue Eyes," Bob Dylan's "You're A Big Girl Now," and, oh yeah, my song "Been Smoking Too Long" among others. This is a superb album. More info and a couple of samples are available at the Parasol Records website.

On Monday, Grant Geissman laid down lead guitar on my country demo, "Best Thing That's Happened To Me." He did a spectacular job, as always. I've pitched the song to a couple of producers already. We'll see what happens.

I'm preparing for Week 3 of my four-week songwriting course. Taking the opportunity to refresh my memory on copyright law, demo production, collaborator deals, and songwriter income streams. While researching demo production facilities I came across a terrific guy named Marty Rifkin. He has a studio in Santa Monica and offers production services for a very reasonable fee. He plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, dobro, pedal steel, you name it - if it has strings, he plays it. He works quickly and delivers great-sounding demos. We chatted for an hour or so last night and I was extremely impressed. I have no problem recommending him to my students. I'm checking into a couple other places to see what kind of demo packages they offer.
