STRATEGY FOR THE DAY: Say when.

I got a press release yesterday with some great news from a friend. (I know. I don't usually get updates from friends via press releases but this one deserves it.) Janiva Magness is a blues singer of enormous talent. She has worked like a bulldog to get where she is in a tough, tough business. There have been times when I know she was ready to give it all up; when the work load and the low paying gigs were just not worth the frustration. But her music always pulled her through and she is finally getting the recognition she deserves. She was the Blue Music Award winner in 2006 and 2007 for Best Contemporary Female Artist and has just been signed to blues label, Alligator Records. Hooray!!!!

Janiva is an amazing blues vocalist, gritty and elegant at the same time. She's a consummate live performer with a packed schedule of live shows and a hot, hot band. Even more impressive, she puts across that live feel in her recordings. Her CD's are raw and compelling. She manages to capture the emotion and depth of a blues performance and slaps it onto a CD. The playing is edgy, the singing is raw, present, and immediate. I have not heard a contemporary blues CD better than hers.
